Magazine Cover Review
My initial impressions of the printed magazines and feature article was that there are many different factors that need to come into play when making a good magazine. Some of the factors are the lettering, text size, words, headlines, color scheme, tone, and symbolism. For example, in the “Cosmopolitan” magazine, there was an intense tone and statement. The statement was “Wear a damn mask”. In this command it shows emphasis on a real-world problem and gets the viewers' attention especially because they used a curse word which is not common on magazine covers. This develops the interest of new audiences with anyone regarding the mask statement but also others. They also used a question the magazine cover which was “Will you ever put on heels again” which has to go along with the real world problem of people not going out as much anymore and don’t get the opportunity to wear nicer clothes, so this is geared towards women since it mentions heels.
Also, in the magazine Men’s Health my impression was very different compared to the Cosmopolitan magazine. Compared to the bright cover of Cosmopolitan, this magazine cover was dark with a big and strong man on the front. This cover had bigger and bolder fonts which gets viewers' attention because the bigger and bolder the font, the more likely they are trying to get the viewers' attention. This cover also had advertisements on the front cover such as advertisements for race, fitness, and health.
In the magazine Sports illustrated my initial impression was very mixed and surprised. On the cover was a pretty woman in a swimsuit. This is uncommon for a Sports illustrated magazine cover and most likely got a lot of viewers’ attention. Not only because it is a woman in a swimsuit but also because most don’t expect to see this sort of cover in Sports illustrated. This cover also had a lot of bright pastel colors like blues and white. This was also surprising because the cover had nothing to do with sports.
In the Rolling Stones magazine, the cover was bound to catch many people's attention. This is because of the political headlines and subtitles. However, this is also because the man in the covers outfit color coordinates with all of the text and words around him which is pleasing to the eye which gets readers attention. They used bolder colors such as red and black.
In the magazine Vogue my initial impressions were good. The magazine was very beautiful, classy, and elegant looking. The color scheme matches the woman's shirt and head wrap. The woman on the cover was Rhianna and she is very famous so she will get a lot of viewers’ attention because of her fame and beauty.
Looking at all of these covers, I think I want to do a magazine cover instead of a movie opening scene. I think I could be more creative and successful with a magazine cover and could spend better time on it.
Magazines not mentioned...
Harry Styles and Justin Beiber are both very famous celebrities that have a lot of fans and constant attention. In Harry's magazine he is on the cover of Vogue. He was the first man to ever be on the cover of Vogue solo. In the magazine cover he is obviously the center of attention and we can gather by knowledge and context clues that he is loved by many to have been privileged with this experiment and title. In the cover, he is wearing a dress so show contrast to toxic masculinity and the norms of what men usually wear and are appeared to be seen. This had a big effect on the readers because this was something that is very rare and not seen often. In Justin Beibers cover there is an obvious correlation between the color scheme and his tattoo's, as they do match. As well as having less article titles on the front cover to focus on the main point "The Rebirth of Justin Beiber".
