AS Portfolio Project Concept Refinement
Fall 2020CATEGORYDETAILS
Film OR Magazine Magazine
Genre Women's Sports
Target Audience (Be specific) Female athletes/ anyone who likes women's sports
What is your concept? (Be thorough & specific. Review the links on Blackboard) To create a magazine on women’s major league sports and about the clothes they wear. When talking about the clothes they wear it will be about the clothes that help them perform the best or that they like the most rather than sponsorships and brand deals.
How did you conceive the idea for this concept? There are so many men’s sports magazines and we wanted to make one for women
What do you believe is unique about your concept? It's not just about the sports and not just about the clothes it’s a combination of both.
Why do you believe this product will be of interesting your audience? I think audience members will want to read about women athletes and the clothes they like the best rather than a basic magazine where everything is the same.
My thoughts on our feedback in class for our pitch impacted our vision for our concept in a positive way. We got good feedback from our peers saying it was a good and unique idea that gave us more confidence going into our portfolio project. Our classmates did not have any negative feedback on our project however they thought that it was a good idea to do a magazine on women's sports and their athletic wear. Someone in the group had mentioned they had not seen something like this before, or not very often so this was encouraging to hear. However, we had encouragement on how we incorporated the sportswear that isn’t sponsorship's or brand deals as well as the latest information and updates on women's major league sports. This gives us positive feedback that makes us not want to disappoint in our magazine.
I read the data link titled Magazine Publishing Trends for 2019 from Wood Wing. With reading the information from the link, it helped further our confidence in our women's sports magazine. In the link it talks about how you have to have strategies and good ideas in order to be unique and stand out in the magazine and publishing world. It states, ““Niche publishers have not merely survived the past decade - many of them are thriving. They’ve managed this feat by staying relentlessly focused on one specific category and by thoroughly understanding the types of content and information that their audiences want, need – and in some cases, what readers don’t yet know they need,” says CredSpark an audience insight specialist.” When reading this we knew we had to be niche. We want readers to take us by surprise and not know they need our magazine until they read it and become obsessed.
The article assigned for magazines helps support our concept because they talk a bout the beauty and art of writing and also writers of color. Lanie and I want to create the best magazine we can and show people how there can be beauty in writing. In the article it states, "Mensah Demary: It's important to be in tune with the interests and conversations of readers who gravitate toward certain books while articulating their desires for greater literary representation, not only in who is published, but in ideas and perspectives. " She talked about perspectives and giving the people new ideas and interests. This is exactly what we want to do.
